West Carteret Patriot Update: 3.29.26

Good afternoon Patriots, here is your Weekly Patriot for March 29th. A reminder that this Friday is an early release day as we begin our Spring Break next week (April 6-10). Happy Easter in advance to all of Patriot Nation. Your Weekly Patriot will resume on Sunday, April 12.

A reminder to student drivers who park on campus. Parking passes should be displayed clearly on the car windshield. Students parking without permits will be addressed by school administration. Additionally, students need to observe safety in the parking lot - to include parking and driving. Student driving and parking on campus is a privilege and can be revoked for non compliance with rules and expectations.

The Patriot Way includes expectations of readiness for learning. We have been advising students of dress code over the past few weeks. School attire should be appropriate for the learning environment. A reminder that dress code expectations include no headgear of any kind, no blankets or pajama pants. Electronic Devices should be put away from 7:30-2:40 and students should arrive on time to class.

Prom tickets are on sale, students must get a code from Mrs. Mayo in the library. Any fees that need to be paid in person should be paid on Wednesday April 1st. The most convenient way to pay fees is using School Cash Online: https://carteretcounty.schoolcashonline.com/.

For your information, we will host a Rising 9th Grade information night on Monday, March 30th. This will be from 5:30-7:00. We will be mailing personal invitations to our Rising 9th graders. Registration for the 2026-27 school year continues this month. This week our Counselors will be visiting our Middle Schools to meet with our future Patriots.

In Patriot Athletics: Lacrosse had a big home win over New Bern last week, and Baseball and Softball also continued their winning ways - we had an extra inning win at Havelock in Baseball while Softball won 4-3 - and both teams got shutouts on Friday night at home. Soccer netted 5 goals in a win over Havelock on Tuesday and battled in a double overtime tie on Friday hosting Northside. Track traveled on Friday and placed well; Bailey Salter took 1st in the Discuss and Levi Maness took first in Pole Vault.

Come out this week and support our athletes: Track hosts the Crystal Coast Championship - County meet at Home on Wednesday, and Baseball/Softball/Soccer host Croatan on Thursday.

Please enjoy the rest of your evening and let us know if we can support you in any additional ways at the schoolhouse.

West Carteret High School Marine Science students recently visited the NC Division of Marine Fisheries to explore how scientists determine the age of fish using otoliths, or ear bones. This hands-on experience gave students a deeper understanding of marine research and fisheries management right here in our state. A big thank you to the WCHS Community Partnership Academic Booster Club for helping sponsor field trip opportunities like this for our students. Your support makes learning come to life! 💙🤍 #WestCarteretHS #PatriotPride

Congratulations to these Patriots who were recently accepted into the 2026 NC Governor's School! The North Carolina Governor's School is a four-week summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students, integrating academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses. Learning focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline, and it does not involve credit, tests, or grades. Students are selected to attend through a competitive process after being nominated through their school system. We are so proud of all these students!

Patriots in the Community!

West Carteret High School’s Future Teachers of America spent time this week reading to students at Newport Elementary School in celebration of Read Across America Week. Sharing the love of reading with younger students is a great way for our future educators to connect with the community and inspire the next generation of learners.

We are proud of these Patriots for representing WCHS and helping make reading fun for our local students.

West Carteret Patriot Update: 3.1.26 Good afternoon, here is your Weekly Patriot for March 1st. I appreciate student, staff, and community support as we approach the last week of Term 4. Last week we administered our ACT successfully and conducted our biannual practice lockdown. Our Winter Athletes competed hard in basketball as they both traveled in the second round and we also celebrated with a pancake breakfast on Friday morning hosted by our Student Government. Two Wrestlers placed in the State Tournament and several Indoor Track members also placed in the State. Last week we celebrated wonderful employee awards: Madison Clark was voted our Beginning Teacher of the Year, Laura Prestwich was voted our Classified Employee of the Year, Mickie Broadhurst was voted our Certified Employee of the Year, and Jessica Lewis was voted our Teacher of the Year. These awards highlight my pride in leading Patriot Nation alongside all the excellent staff members that support our total school program. Registration for the upcoming school year will be underway this coming month. Students have received course descriptions from Mrs. Turner in an email on Friday, and our Counseling team will begin classroom visits to meet with each individual student in a 1:1 conference to support course selection for next year. Please have conversations with your student on best course selections. On Monday night we will host our Community Partnership Academic Booster Club meeting at 5:00 in the Media Center. Mrs. Turner will provide information on course registration and Mrs. Mayo will provide information on College planning. Please enjoy the rest of your evening and let us know if we can support you in any way at the schoolhouse.

As you prepare to enjoy the Superbowl, I am grateful to share that we are prepared to welcome Patriot students to a regularly scheduled workweek. Our SGA has designated days for Valentine Spirit week, please see our social media posts for details.

I want to recognize a few outstanding members of our team. Last week was National School Counselor Week, and we look forward to celebrating them in the building this week. Our counselors play a vital role in supporting students, families, and the success of our school-from long-term academic guidance to immediate social and emotional support. Thank you to Mr. Lancaster, Mrs. Turner, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. Sharkan for everything you do for West Carteret.

I also want to recognize School Bus Driver Appreciation Week here in North Carolina. We are grateful for the dedicated drivers who safely transport our students each day and help ensure a strong start and finish to every school day. Thank you to our bus drivers for your professionalism, care, and commitment to keeping our students safe-we truly appreciate all you do.

We will have some adjustments to our schedule for ACT Blitz sessions to prepare our Junior class. Tuesday and Thursday we will be running an ACT Blitz Schedule. On Tuesday, Juniors will report to the cafeteria after their first period for a one hour Blitz session on Reading. On Thursday, Juniors will be assigned to either the media center or the cafeteria after their first period for a Blitz session to focus on Math.

Our Swim and Dive Team will compete this Thursday and Friday at State Competition and our Wrestlers will compete at Regionals on Friday and Saturday. Basketball will travel to Swansboro on Tuesday and Northside on Thursday.

This month is also CTE month. We have excellent opportunities for career exploration in these pathways. We extend our congratulations to NJROTC as both of our academic teams secured 1st and 3rd place at the Myrtle Beach High School Brain Brawl on Saturday. Our Health Sciences classes are hosting a Blood Drive on Wednesday from 9-2, so please consider supporting our community by donating.

West Carteret Patriot Update: 2.5.26 Good afternoon, this is a special Patriot update for Feb. 5. This update comes in light of the many changes due to our inclement weather. As you know, Carteret County Schools has designated Friday, February 6 as a remote learning day. Please ensure students are checking their virtual classrooms both for daily attendance forms and instructional materials. Students should complete one attendance form for each class period. Other scheduling updates that I'd like to share include a reschedule of tomorrow's basketball game, which will now take place on Monday, February 16th. Also mark your calendars for this weekend. Please come out to support our student athletes as our Booster Club hosts the Captain's Mess at the Dune's Club. This fundraising event is from 6:30-10:00 and includes live music, great food, and a silent auction. A QR code supports registration and is available on our social media pages, as well as by contacting our Athletic Director Michael Turner. Our Swim and Dive Team will compete next Thursday and Friday at State Competition and our Wrestlers will compete at Regionals next Friday and Saturday. Patriot Athletics continue to make us proud and we appreciate your support, let's go Patriots! Please enjoy the rest of your evening and we look forward to welcoming students back to the schoolhouse next week.
